Teens picking sport over social media!

As the title suggests, our latest MyStickers Survey uncovered a few interesting facts about teenage sporting habits.

More than half of all teenagers we surveyed do less than two hours exercise per week at school and do the majority of their exercise outside of school hours. More worringly, only a quarter of teens are doing up to 4 hours exercise outside of school every week! The NHS guidelines for children and young adults aged 5-18 state 60 minutes of moderate exercise per day is required for healthy muscles and bones.

So, with one in five children in the UK being obese, and campaigners calling for primary school children to be tested for levels of fitness, the question we need to ask is whether teenagers are getting enough exercise.

The figures

2,023 secondary school pupils answered our latest survey in which we found over half (53%) of teenagers do less that two hours of sport each week at school and one in ten (11%) are doing less than one hour at school.

Outside of school the story isn’t much different with 44% doing less than two hours exercise and one in ten (14%) doing less than an hour per week. The most concerning figure is the 10% of teenagers who say they don’t do any sport or exercise outside of school.

The statistics don’t show that its all doom and gloom though, 55% of teens say they do more than two hours of exercise outside of school each week and 47% are doing two or more hours of sport at school each week.

The most popular exercise methods? Running, swimming and not surprisingly, football.

And the best finding…

Our survey found that teenagers really do want to do exercise and play sport! So much in fact that three fifths (59%) would rather play sport than a computer game and almost half (46%) would rather play sport than use social media.

Don’t get too excited though, we also found that two thirds (67%) would rather hang out with their friends than play sport!
