Worried about starting Secondary School? Don’t be!

Worried about starting school?New research from School Stickers has found that many of the over 500,000 pupils leaving primary school this summer will be worried about starting secondary school, but their peers say there is no need.

School Stickers asked over 1300 secondary school pupil what they had thought about starting secondary school, and what it was really like.

Almost two thirds (65%) admitted that they had worried about it with the most common concerns being not making any friends (34%), not being able to do the work (27%) and being bullied (26%). Getting lost was also frequently mentioned. Only a third (35%) said that they hadn’t been worried at all.

However the really good news is that almost half (46%) said that starting secondary school was actually less scary than they thought it was going to be, and a further 45% said that it was not scary at all. Only one in twenty (6%) said it was more scary than they thought it would be.

The survey also found that as well as being worried, almost two thirds (64%) had felt excited about starting secondary school. Three fifths (60%) had been excited about making new friends, half (52%) has looked forward to learning new things, a quarter (28%) had been excited about playing new sports and only 10% had not been excited at all.

Neil Hodges, Managing Director, School Stickers, said, “Starting secondary school is a major milestone in most people’s lives and can be incredibly daunting. We hope that the more than half a million pupils starting secondary school this autumn will be reassured when they hear that it is unlikely to be as scary as they might think it will be and probably won’t be scary at all.”

*The survey was sent to all secondary schools across the UK and promoted to the 68,000 secondary school pupils that use www.mystickers.co.uk. 1310 pupils took part.
