Teachers: will you join in with Social Media Day 2015?

In 2010 Mashable created Social Media Day to celebrate social media’s impact on global communication.

30th June 2015 marks the 6th annual Social Media Day.

The impact of social media on our day to day lives and communication is astounding, even for young children. News and life updates are shared in real time in 140 characters and childhood and family friends can stay in touch from different sides of the world. Social Media allows brands (like us) to engage with customers (like you) on an entirely different and personal level than we could have just 10 years ago.

In schools social media can be used to teach, research and organise events like Teachmeets. In April we posted Social Media in The Classroom: Teaching Responsible Social Media Use which is a great read if you have a spare few minutes.

Stick Social Media Everywhere

For one day I challenge you to share the good message of social media to as many places and people in as many ways as possible. Here’s some relatively easy ways you can share good messages of social media:

  • Teach someone to use Facebook or Twitter
  • Run a blog? Write about why you love social media and what it enables you to do
  • Seek out and connect with fellow teachers and professionals in your field
  • Tweet 20 things you like about Twitter
  • Send out an email about social media day within your school and encourage the recipients to do one the things on here or even make up your own list
  • Why not try your hand at learning how to use a new social network?
  • Attend a social media day conference or meetup if there is one near you
  • Use #SMDay on Twitter
  • Read this Teachers Guide to Twitter
