Surprising Sports Day Statistics: The MyStickers Survey

Welcome to the School Stickers blog! We’ve been taking a look at our latest MyStickers Survey responses and found some great Sports Day related figures to share with you.

  • Over 200,000 secondary school pupils wont be taking part in a sports day this year.
  • A fifth (22%) of secondary school pupils attend schools where all participants are rewarded, not just the winners.
  • A quarter of pupils (28%) say their school makes sports day fun, even for those who aren’t very good at it.

2,023 fantastic pupils took part in our MyStickers survey this time around which was sent out to all secondary schools across the UK.

This year 1 in 6 secondary pupils wont be attending a sports day because their school doesn’t hold one. That means an estimated 200,000 pupils* will be missing out on a day which has become an annual UK school tradition.

Neil Hodges, Managing Director of School Stickers said,”There is a lot of talk at the moment about young people not doing enough exercise, so it is a shame that 200,000 teenagers are going to be missing out on an event, which if done right, can be a great way of reminding teenagers how much fun sport can be.”

UntitledCompetition confusion?

Speculation has surrounded the topic of competitiveness at sports days during the last few years, the good news is that for the most part, pupils still love the competition with 31% saying they really enjoy that aspect.

Pupils that don’t thrive in competitive sport still enjoy the day with 28% of pupils saying their school makes sports day fun, even for those who aren’t the best at it and 23% say its still fun even when they don’t win!

The winners?

It seems there are huge differences in the ways schools reward participating pupils. 40% of pupils go to schools that solely reward the winners on the day, 22% of pupils attend schools where all pupils are rewarded for joining in and 13% go to schools where schools give out rewards as part of a house point system.
