Musical Marking Chairs
Utilizing a universally understood party game is a great way to ensure everyone knows how the process works.
- Ask students to complete an exam question or similar task that fits in with your subject matter. When they’ve finished pick a student to select a song. You can use youtube for this.
- Arrange students in a order so they can start making their way around the room, passing every desk as they go. When the music starts they can start walking around the classroom, when they pass you make sure you hand out a red pen to each pupil.
- When the music stops students must sit at the nearest seat next to them with one of their classmates books open ready to be marked.
- At this first stop students are asked to write a friendly comment about the work in front of them. This could be about presentation, effort, length.
- When students are all done they should be standing up in order again ready to start moving when the music starts back up.
- At the second stop students must write something specific about the work they’re marking referring to the mark scheme on the board. Once this is done students stand up and start moving around again.
- At the third stop students should moderate the first two comments and write a comment that is helpful. This helpful comment must refer to the mark scheme and provide a clear target for improvement.
- When this is done students can go back to their own desks, read their comments and get to doing some DIRT marking.
