As a teacher I’m sure you’ve heard of K.I.S.S (Keep it simple stupid). Here’s a few ways you can apply this rule to your teaching to make what you do in your classes highly effective.
Fundamental K.I.S.S lesson rules
- Tell your class something new
- Check whether they get it
- Get them to practise it
Master the art and craft of explaining, checking and setting practise
With focused, deliberate practice you can become masterful at explaining, checking and setting effective and efficient practice. The focus on these three areas ensures a better chance of success than bouncing around, trying out different teaching methods.
Pupils of all ages like consistency
Whilst you might be teaching the same subject all day everyday, pupils experience up to 6 different classes each day! When pupils have so much to wrap their heads around throughout the day, as much consistency as possible is beneficial.
By constantly mixing it up and trying new things you might be making it more difficult for pupils to focus on one thing. What your areas of focus in your lessons are don’t really make a difference to pupils, it’s just important that you have some.
Simple, affordable printed rewards
Rewarding pupils helps to enforce understanding of the levels of behaviour and work expected of them. Our stickers, stamps, certificates and postcards all carry basic and recognisable messages of encouragement.
