Motivate Pupils with Certificates for Achievement

AlexStudents of all age groups appreciate recognition for the hard work they put into their studies. This sense of achievement can come in the form of recognised qualifications, token reward systems or simply some words of praise from a trusted adult.

Teachers also benefit from praising their pupils. If designed properly, certificates and other award schemes can increase students’ confidence and motivation for pretty much anything- from academia, sports, career development, to even citizenship. All of these achievements make the school environment a better place for everyone.

Why develop Award Schemes within schools

As mentioned, rewards motivate pupils to try their best, which of course has a knock-on benefit for teachers who are looking to improve their classroom management skills.

However, further than that, school award schemes help be seen to improve the employability of pupils, once they enter the workplace. Things like completing work experience or taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme shows potential employers that the candidate has used their initiative and has taken part in something that wasn’t just related to school work.

Certificates and other awards are great for motivating studetns to do well

Certificates can also inspire students to take charge of their own learning and become self-directed in their enthusiasm to study things that are not necessarily part of the curriculum. Developing a positive attitude and improving study skills will encourage students to become life-long learners.

Pupils’ self-esteem can also be raised through school-wide award schemes because of course, certificates are not only for the smartest or sportiest students. Recognising the efforts of those who are fantastic communicators or for those who care about environmental issues, will also help build a positive school environment where everyone’s individual talents can shine.

Learning that goes beyond the classroom

As we all know, learning takes place everywhere, not just in the classroom. In order to recognise which efforts are worthy of wider recognition, here is a list of potential positive behaviours which teachers can observe and reward their students for;

  • Hobbies and interests outside of school
  • Engagement in school clubs and societies for example, student council
  • Volunteering in the local community
  • Mentoring or becoming a ‘welcome buddy’ to other pupils
  • Taking part in work experience or learning other skills which improve employability (e.g. learning to code)
  • International or Intercultural activities, perhaps as part of an exchange program
  • Students who have set up their own enterprises outside of school
  • Activism or efforts to improve the environment

Special Award Certificates
Sometimes, children can just be particularly ‘super-starry’ at times. For example, a pupil may have helped you re-design a billboard display over lunchtime and will therefore be in need of an extra-special ‘thanks’ from the teacher.
