Living Streets is the national charity that supports pedestrians. Their aim is to work with the public in creating safe, attractive and enjoyable streets which everyone will want to walk on.
Walk to School Week 2015 takes place from May 18th- 25th this year, the focus is all about the health benefits of walking!
The Living Streets team have put together lots of information about the benefits of walking to both physical and mental health. Find out how you can get your school involved here.
Joe Irvin, Chief Executive of Living Streets told School Stickers:
As part of National Walking Month we’re urging families and schools up and down the country to give walking a go during Walk to School Week.”
During Walk to School Week, children and parents across the country will be celebrating the benefits of walking and the importance of the walk to school. It’s free, green and easy, and above all it works. We need to encourage children to get walking now and set healthy habits for the future.
A quick look at the benefits of walking to school:
- No parking stress
- Less congested roads
- Confidence building
- Raises health awareness
- Helps to introduce road safety awareness at an early age
- It can be fun, you’ll notice new things and meet new people in your area
- Promotes independence and freedom
- Children that walk to school are calmer and stay more focused in lessons
The Independent curated data here and looked at how the attitudes towards children walking to school in the past few years has changed.
The School Stickers Guide to Incorporating a walk to school into your routine
1. If you drive because its too far to walk- Park a little distance from the school gates and walk the rest of that way with your children
2. Live near other parents with children at your child’s school? You could organise taking it in turns to walk children to school, not only does this make it less of a burden but it means children get to walk with friends.
3. Get a good breakfast, as Laura from The Children’s Food Trust says: “A healthy breakfast will help you get your brain and body into gear before you leave the house – it’ll not only fuel the walk to school, but help concentration and attention span in class too.” Find out Laura’s breakfast suggestions here.
4. Think! The Governments road safety initiative have a great section on their website for pupils, parents and teachers about staying safe when using the roads and footpaths. Click here for advice, facts and resources surrounding road safety from Think!
