Its Nelson Mandela day this Saturday, each year his birthday, 18th July is celebrated.  This was decided in 2009 by the UN General Assembly in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.

  • Was given the name Rolihlahla Mandela at birth and was given the name Nelson when he was at school at 7 years of age.
  • Mandela is considered the father of modern South Africa.
  • Has both a woodpecker and a nuclear particle named after him.
