What is National Hero Day?

National heros day in the UK was founded by a supporter of Help For Heroes in memory of his son, Marine Richard Hollington, who was the 300th UK casualty in Afghanistan in June 2010. This year the day takes place on the 23rd October throughout the UK.

The idea is for schools to encourage pupils to honour their heroes by going to school dressed as their hero for one day instead of wearing school uniform. It’s not restricted to schools, a number of workplaces and youth groups also partake on the day.

The aim of the day is to fundraise and donate to the charity which helps to provide better facilities to servicemen and women who have been injured in the line of duty.

 What can your school do?

There are lots of different ways to fundraise on National Heroes day. You could hold a non uniform day and have those that can donate £1, hold a bake sale and organise events like a sponsored silence or run.

Make a list of inventive ideas and fun activities you think your school would like to partake in and suggest them in your next meeting.
