School Stickers Storytelling Suggestions

The 27th of October is National Tell a Story Day across the UK. Here at School Stickers we believe all children should be able to enjoy a great story! Here’s our suggestions and products that could make the day super story worthy!

Stories can be told in all kinds of places, with or without a book to read from. Libraries, homes, schools, nurseries and hospitals are just a few of the venues that will be embracing storytelling on the 27th.

Storytelling started off in traditional formats like fairy tales, folk tales & mythology.  They’re a means of entertainment, cultural preservation and instilling moral values. Plot, narrative and characters are all familiar elements of storytelling. There are literacy activities for all ages which aim to inspire children to read and learn about the art of storytelling.

Description is an important aspect of literacy to grasp. This activity is great for getting younger children thinking about how descriptive words and sentences help to form a picture of a character in your imagination.

  1. Read as a class a chapter or character description in your favourite age appropriate book.
  2. Set children the task of drawing a certain character from the book and ask them to write their defining descriptive sentences from the book around the image.
  3. You can then use the images as a collage on your class notice board!

Film Inspirations

CB-WOTW-00Thousands of children’s novels have been adapted into films and this activity takes advantage of that. This activity aims to see if pupils can spot the differences between the story in the book and in the film. If your class have been reading a book that has a film adaptation this will be perfect for you.

Harry Potter, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Mary Poppins are all options for this. After your class has completed reading a book you can show the film adaptation in class. Make sure they’re paying attention though, they’ll be asked questions at the end!

Is your class half way through a book or reading books individually? Ask your pupils to write a short account of what they think is going to happen in the rest of the book.

Then, once you’ve finished the book you can come back and compare what pupils thought was going to happen to what actually happened. This activity can lead to discussions of red herrings and plot twists in future lessons so it’s a great multi lesson activity.
