1. Quality reading books. Exposing children to new languages and improving children’s vocabulary range is a great way to improve the content of pupils writing.

2. Vocabulary Cards. When teaching a new word type or sentence structures these are great for pupils to refer to. You can easily make them yourself. A great idea is to supply pupils with words to use in a sentence when learning about persuasive writing.

3. Dictionaries and encyclopedias. These are an obvious english essential and it’s a vital skill to be able to use them properly.

4. Mini whiteboards. Do you often do quick fire question and answer games at the beginning of your class? These are perfect and easy to store in a box under your desk.

5. Films are great as writing stimulus or as a gentle introduction to a new book.

6. Stickers, badges and certificates to motivate great writing and reading. It doesn’t matter if you teach primary or secondary, pupils of all ages benefit from rewards.

7. Coloured pens. Purple, green and red pens are great for peer and self assessment tasks, they can also be used for colour coding work.

8. Plans B,C &D. Lesson plans don’t always go the way your expect, pupils don’t always cooperate so make sure you’re prepared to save a failing lesson.
