International sporting events used in schools to motivate and inspire pupils

  • 11% of pupils say their school doing something themed around Rio Olympics 2016
  • 8% of pupils say Olympic values used in their school
  • Only 5% of pupils say their school doing something linked to Euro 2016

One in ten pupils (11%) say their school is doing something themed around the Rio Olympics 2016, but when asked about this summer’s other big sporting events, only 5% say their school is doing something themed around Euro 2016 which kicked off at the weekend, and 2% say their school does something around Wimbledon.

According to a survey of over 1,000 secondary school pupils by leading provider of school rewards, School Stickers, 18% of pupils said that whilst their school isn’t doing anything themed around this year’s big sporting events, they wished they were.

Sporting events can be an incredibly powerful way to motivate and engage pupils. There have been many initiatives launched which use Euro 2016 as a lesson subject, including one from the FA and the Literacy Trust, who worked with children’s author and football fanatic Tom Palmer to create a set of literacy resources for students aged 7-13.

There was a lot of work done in schools during the London Olympics 2012, and one in ten (8%) pupils say that the seven Olympic values of friendship, respect, excellence, determination, inspiration, courage and equality are still used in their school. An additional 19% say that these values are using in their school, but they are not called the Olympic values.

Neil Hodges, Managing Director, School Stickers, said, “It is an exciting summer of sport ahead with the Euros, and the Rio Olympics, and it is interesting to learn that so many schools are using the Olympics as a theme when it will actually be taking place once the schools have finished for the summer. Maybe if England, Wales or Northern Ireland do really well in their groups we will see an increase in the number of schools getting involved in Euro 2016. Do get in touch, we would love to know how this year’s sporting events are being used in your school.”
